How to Get an Emergency Protective Order

Studies suggest that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men may be affected by domestic violence at least once in their life. In response to this crisis, states have passed laws creating a legal process to issue orders to protect you from a partner that is harassing, abusing, or stalking you. Protective orders straddle the family law and criminal law system. They are issued in civil or family court, but violation of a protective order carries criminal fines and possibly jail time.
