How To Choose a Good Lawyer – Finding a lawyer for your case can be daunting. In ‘How To Choose a Good Lawyer’ Mike strips down the process to its essentials and details the factors that viewers must consider when choosing a lawyer to represent them.

Revealing that he himself doesn’t like lawyers without portfolio, he cautions people to be careful of lawyers who advertise on TV that they can settle your case for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Mike insists that for the best possible results, you need a lawyer who can see your case all the way through trial. “You only get one chance to have your case resolved and to be compensated for your own injuries,” Mike says. “Once you settle your case for less than its worth, you’re stuck.”

Since being admitted to the practice of law in 1976, Mike Burg has enjoyed a highly successful career that clearly places him at the pinnacle of the legal profession. He is an outstanding trial attorney who has dedicated his life to fighting for the underdog, and to protecting the rights of Americans to a trial by jury.

Mike is the recipient of numerous legal awards, including the Clarence Darrow Award, the American Association for Justice Heavy Lifting Award, and the Weidemann Wysocki Award. In 2016, he was named the Denver Lawyer of the Year for Product Liability Litigation – Plaintiffs, by Best Lawyers® in America. Additionally, he was named one of the Top 50 Trial Attorneys in America by the Legal 500 from 2012 through 2015, and was named Lawyer of the Year in Products Liability by Best Lawyers in America in 2015.

In 2013, Michael was named Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers in America for Mass Tort Litigation / Class Actions – Plaintiffs. Additionally, Law Week Colorado named Mike the Lawyer of the Decade from 2000-2010. He is Past President of the National Trial Lawyers (2010).

Mike has been appointed to numerous leadership positions by Federal Judges around the country in a variety of high-profile Multi District Litigations, including being co-lead attorney in the Ortho Evra and Yaz/Yasmin litigations, which resulted in settlements of over Billion dollars. He continues to actively practice law in the areas of catastrophic personal injury and commercial litigation and has won numerous verdicts for his clients, over twenty of which have been in excess of M.

In addition to his many accolades, in April of 2016 Michael will be inducted into the Trial Lawyers Hall of Fame which is located at Temple University Law School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Nick Paranjape: It’s 7:45. Finding the right attorney for whatever legal case you’re dealing with certainly can be a challenge.

Today, Attorney Rick Piliponis joins us to kind of break down how someone should go about picking a lawyer for their case and what questions to ask when making this very important selection.

Good to see you, Rick.

Rick Piliponis: Good to see you.

Nick Paranjape: So I’m going to interview you right now.

Rick Piliponis: Excellent.

Nick Paranjape: Why should you be my attorney?

Rick Piliponis: Well, one of the things that’s important that you need to understand or that people who are hiring an attorney need to understand like if you have a medical malpractice case or you have a workers’ comp case.

Let’s say for a medical malpractice case, the attorney that’s going to be on the other side that’s going to be representing the hospital or that’s going to be representing the doctor, 99% of what they do is defend and represent doctors and hospitals.

So you need to have someone who kind of understands what those – what those cases entail and what is going to kind of go forward from step one all the way through to trial.

Nick Paranjape: Sure. You kind of get a history of the kind of cases this lawyer that you’re talking to…

Rick Piliponis: Sure.

Nick Paranjape: … has worked before and also research I would think would be extremely important whether it’s the internet, I guess you Google them.

Rick Piliponis: It’s just been – it’s being familiar with – from your side, you want someone who’s familiar with that area of law and it used to be where attorneys kind of had just a general practice.

But practices have kind of evolved so that there’s more specialization. There’s more – when you’re focused on something, you can do a better job with it.

Nick Paranjape: Sure. What are some of the key questions when someone is looking for the right attorney? What should that person be asking the attorney?

Rick Piliponis: One of the things you want to know is what kind of law they practice and if they do have, you know, if they’ve got their hands in a bunch of different parts, it’s hard to focus on one thing.

And you want to kind of find out where they are in their practice as far as how many cases they take, how often they go to trial, how, you know, how they’re going to handle your case. That’s – and you can find out a lot of information about attorneys.

And, you know, like you said, one of the things that you can do is look him up on the internet. There are reviews on the internet. There are, you know, attorneys who have websites.

People have gone on their websites and given some input into what they think of how they handled their case and that could be helpful to let you know what you’re stepping into because it’s a big decision and you don’t always realize that right off the bat.

Nick Paranjape: Sure. All right. Well, if you are interested in and you are needing an attorney, you can certainly call these guys over the at the Higgins Firm. There’s their contact information, 615-353-0930 or you can always contact Rick personally,
