Even if we ride western on a loose rein, we want our horse to accept contact when we do pick up on the reins, we don’t want him to resist or fight the pressure. If you use a bitted bridle it’s much easier to get him to understand this if you start in a rope halter, in a small pen, as the contact during the learning process can cause unnecessary pain. Once the horse understands he will indeed get a release of pressure when he gives to the contact it will be much easier to teach him this in his bitted bridle. My horses have never been ridden in bits but I have been able to teach them to give and flex at the poll. Thanks for watching.
