How can I find a free lawyer?

Wouldn’t a 1-800-FREE-LAWYER be great???

Unfortunately, it doesn’t exist but there are some things you can do to get legal help from a professional, licensed attorney which may be free or lower in cost than going the traditional route.

If you are or might be a victim of domestic violence, the local legal aid may be able to help you. Please see the information for Broward County’s Legal Aid Service below.

If you somehow do not meet their requirements for free legal help, they can refer you to a private attorney (or a list of them) who have volunteered to provide free (“pro bono”) representation to individuals in your situation.

You may also visit the local County Bar Association (see the information for Broward’s below). Most have a referral service that focuses on individuals with little or no income and match you with a network attorney that can charge as little as /hour to represent you!

You may also consider representing yourself. The Supreme Court of Florida maintains a bank of pre-approved, fillable family law forms that anyone can use to get their own case started (there’s even a form to waive the filing fee if you cannot afford it; in Broward, the filing fee is currently 9.00).

The Broward County Clerk offers a free class every 1st Monday at the Main Courthouse. It is taught by attorneys to ensure that you fill out your forms properly. Attorney Simmonds also offers a free 1-hour course every 3rd Monday at Simmonds Legal’s Tamarac location.
