In March 2018, two state chief justices and legal aid experts from states recently affected by natural disasters explained the importance of legal aid programs to disaster preparedness and recovery at LSC’s briefing, “Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria: The Role of Legal Aid in Disaster Recovery.” The panelists discussed how legal aid programs mobilized attorneys in affected areas to provide free legal assistance and direct representation to low-income survivors and highlighted the importance of forming community partnerships before the next disaster strikes.

Speakers included:
-Chief Justice Nathan Hecht, Supreme Court of Texas
-Chief Justice Jorge Labarga, Supreme Court of Florida
-Saundra Brown, Directing Attorney of Disaster Legal Services, Lone Star Legal Aid, headquartered in Houston, Texas
-Monica Vigues-Pitan, Executive Director, Legal Services of Greater Miami, serving Miami-Dade and Monroe counties in Florida
-LSC President James J. Sandman moderated the discussion
