Traumatic Car Accident | Rosemary's Story

Rosemary parked her SUV at the top of her steep driveway one night. She assumed the car was in park, but when gathering bags out of the car she accidentally turned the car steerage into reverse. The next thing she knew her SUV had rolled on top of her and dragged her into the street. She was trapped under her car and was terrified for her life. Her leg was wrapped around the car’s wheel and she could feel all the pressure of the SUV crushing her body.

EMT’s arrived to help her and they told her they were going to have to cut the car off of her. Rosemary was flown to Penn’s Level 1 Trauma Center. Rosemary’s case is what surgeons call a polytrauma, because she had multiple traumatic injuries to different parts of her body. Penn Medicine rushed her to the intensive care unit right away where they performed surgery to put her leg back together. After a successful surgery Rosemary had a long road to recovery.

Penn’s multidisciplinary team was there to help her during her recovery. Rosemary was a fighter, she worked hard with the physical therapist and occupational therapist to regain her mobility. With the help of her Penn team Rosemary was able to learn how to walk again.

Today Rosemary is back to working as a nurse a few days a week, which is very important to her. Being able to watch her daughters succeed in their careers and be with her family helped her fight each day. One moment changed Rosemary’s life, but one decision to go to Penn’s level 1 Trauma Center saved it.
